Georg Jensen Silver Designer Johan Rohde

Johan Rohde (1856–1935) was a Danish painter and designer who became one of the most influential early collaborators of Georg Jensen. His association with the firm began in 1906, when he asked Jensen to produce silver objects from his drawings. Their collaboration continued for decades and helped broaden the artistic direction of the Georg Jensen silversmithy.

Rohde’s designs were generally more restrained and structured than Georg Jensen’s richly naturalistic early work. He favored balanced proportions, simplified botanical motifs and clean, elegant lines. His work helped guide the company from Art Nouveau toward the more disciplined forms later associated with Art Deco and Scandinavian modernism.

He is best known for his hollowware and flatware, including the celebrated Acorn pattern and Cosmos service. Rohde also designed a smaller number of jewelry pieces for Georg Jensen. His brooches typically feature stylized flowers, leaves and berries arranged in compact, symmetrical compositions. These uncommon jewelry designs are valued for their refined modeling and distinctive combination of natural inspiration and formal order.
