Azurmalachite William Spratling Taxco Brooch in Sterling Silver

Likely crafted in the late 1940s, this William Spratling stylized parrot brooch (known as “Lorenzo”) showcases a striking azurmalachite stone, a gemstone Spratling incorporated after 1944 according to Spratling Silver: A Field Guide by Phyllis Goddard. With its bold Aztec-inspired design, this Taxco silver jewelry statement piece is featured on page 38 of Mexican Silver by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk (Schiffer Publishing, 2007) and on page 46 of Spratling Silver: A Field Guide. The hallmark includes “SPRATLING” and “MADE IN MEXICO” in a circular design, as well as “STERLING” with a reversed “N,” a recognized bench error in Spratling’s workshop.
