Antonio Pineda Taxco Bamboo Bangle | Vintage Sterling Silver | Mid-Century Mexico Bracelet

Designed by Antonio Pineda, this is fabulous vintage solid sterling silver bracelet depicting bamboo shoots interconnected into an almost circular bangle. The design is realistic and the handmade construction is heavy and well crafted. This vintage bracelet is 970 silver, which has a higher silver content than 925 sterling silver, more commonly seen today. This vintage bracelet is a versatile and highly collectible mid-century piece.

This fully signed Antonio Pineda bracelet is marked with his signature crown. It is also marked silver, 970, and has an Eagle 58 Mexican assayer's mark. This solid silver bracelet weighs 31.2 grams, is 2 3/4" high and 2 7/8" wide. The inside wearable dimension is approximately 7 1/2". Based on the marks, this bracelet was likely created in the early 1960s.

Antonio Pineda was born in 1919 in Taxco, Mexico, where he studied fine arts, including sculpture. At age 14, he apprenticed in Taller de Las Delicias under the silversmith master, William Spratling. Antonio founded his own business in 1941, having developed his own unique excellence in design over his eight years at Taller de Las Delicias. Antonio Pineda became internationally renowned for his large yet simply modernist designs, including his exciting use of stones and the fineness and creativity of his hinges, catch, and closure designs.

This brooch was made in Taxco de Alarcon, often just called Taxco. Taxco is a city located in the Mexican state of Guerrero; it is about 100 miles southwest of Mexico City. Taxco is a very old and beautiful city that pre-dates the arrival of the Spanish. Taxco has a long history with silver, as it was mined there at the time of the Aztec and used even then to create beautiful jewelry with exceptional craftsmanship.

In the 1700s, the local silver mine prospered and developed a thriving economy and a vibrant city with exceptional architecture. Many outstanding silver designers and silversmiths have made Taxco their home. Their designs reflect a mixture of Aztec and other native motifs mixed with mid-20th century modernism. Among the notables are William Spratling, who is recognized as starting the Mexican silver renaissance, Antonio Pineda, Frederick Davis, Hector Aguilar, Los Castillo, Margot de Taxco, and Ysidro Garcia Pina (Maricela).
